“How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked…But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night…The wicked are not so, but they are like chaff which the wind drives away.” (Psalm 1:1a, 2, and 4)

I love symmetry, which is probably why I love the first Psalm so much. In verse one, we are presented with the blessed man and given the comparison between him and three other types of men: the wicked, the sinners, and the scoffers. The rest of the Psalm is a masterful commentary on this first verse. It keeps drawing us back in perfect symmetry to these four characters before closing in verse six.

We will spend the next few devotional posts comparing the blessed man to these other three mentioned in the Psalm.

The first comparison is between the blessed man and the wicked man. The Psalmist tells us the blessed man does not walk in the counsel of the wicked. This implies that the blessed man does walk somewhere, just not there.

We find that the wicked man gives counsel. Not only that, but he gives counsel regarding action. He says, “Do this and you will be happy. Go there and you will find what you’re looking for. Get this and you will be fulfilled.” There is plenty of advice in the world. If you go searching for counsel as to what you should do in any given situation, you will find many willing counselors.

But be careful, because Psalm 1 tells us that counsel is something the wicked are prone to. They love to give it. Even among people who claim Christianity, wicked counsel can be given.
